Portugal Residence Pathways for Work, Business and Independent Income
Compare entrepreneurship, independent-income, remote-work, employment and investment pathways—then plan the visa and residence stages together.
Country overview
Match the Residence Basis to the Real Source of Activity
Portugal offers different residence routes for employed work, entrepreneurship or independent professional activity, personal income, remote work, eligible investment and family reunification. The application narrative should reflect what the applicant will actually do and how the household will support itself.
For many applicants, the process has two connected but separate stages: a national residence visa through the relevant Portuguese consular channel, followed by the residence-permit process in Portugal. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals and their families follow different residence rules.
The applicant's work, income, investment, nationality and family relationship determine the correct route. Tax, social-security and immigration consequences should be reviewed separately.

Connect the Visa Category to the Applicant's Real Plan
Common labels such as D2, D7 and D8 are useful shorthand, but the application must satisfy the official purpose, evidence and procedural requirements in force at the time of filing.
D2: Entrepreneur and Independent-Activity Residence
Entrepreneur applicants should explain the proposed business, resources, market, implementation steps and their own role. Independent professionals should show the service activity, qualifications and actual or prospective contracts.
Company formation alone is not residence authorization. The immigration case should demonstrate a credible activity and the means to establish it in Portugal.
D7: Own-Income Residence
D7 planning should identify the nature, stability and accessibility of the applicant's income and provide a coherent Portuguese residence plan. Bank balances alone may not explain an ongoing source of support.
Accommodation, insurance, criminal-record documents and family resources should be coordinated with the consular requirements applying to the applicant's location.
D8: Remote-Work Residence
Remote-work residence focuses on work performed from Portugal for an employer or clients outside Portuguese territory. Employment contracts, service agreements, income and the remote nature of the activity should be clear.
An applicant taking local Portuguese employment may need a different basis. Tax residence, social security and employer obligations require separate analysis.
Employment and Highly Qualified Routes
Employment-based residence normally begins with a genuine Portuguese employment arrangement and the relevant residence-visa process. Regulated professions, labour-market procedures and social-security steps may also be relevant.
The job, remuneration, employer and applicant qualifications should remain consistent across the contract, visa evidence and later residence process.
Residence Permit for Investment Activity (ARI)
ARI eligibility depends on making and maintaining an investment that falls within a category permitted under the current law. Applicants should verify the investment structure, transfer, source of funds and documentary sequence before committing capital.
Immigration eligibility and investment quality are separate questions. Independent legal, financial and commercial due diligence remains essential.

Frequently asked questions
Common Questions About Portugal Residence
Does buying property provide a Portugal residence permit?
Property ownership alone does not create residence rights, and real-estate acquisition is not an eligible ARI investment category under the current framework.
What is the difference between D7 and D8 planning?
D7 commonly refers to residence supported by qualifying own income, while D8 commonly refers to remote employment or independent work performed for entities outside Portugal.
Is the residence visa the final residence permit?
Usually not. The national residence visa supports entry and is followed by the applicable residence-permit process in Portugal.
Can family members apply together?
It depends on the principal route, consular practice, family relationship and location. Some families apply in parallel, while others use a later reunification process.
