Malaysia Immigration Pathways for Work, Talent and Long-Term Stay
Compare employment, specialist-talent, long-stay and family options—then connect the pass to the real work and lifestyle plan.
Country overview
Separate Employment, Talent and Lifestyle Residence
Malaysia uses different pass systems for local employment, established skilled talent, lifestyle residence and qualifying family members. The right option depends on the applicant's work, professional record, sponsoring entity and family plans in Malaysia.
A long-stay or dependant pass should not be assumed to provide unrestricted local work rights. Employment, immigration, company registration and tax residence are connected questions but require separate confirmation.
New and renewal applications must be assessed under the current category thresholds and duration framework. Employers should confirm the live policy before setting remuneration or renewal timing.

Pathway details
Match the Pass to the Work and Residence Purpose
The practical question is not simply how long someone wants to stay. It is whether the applicant will work for a Malaysian employer, qualify as established talent, live under a long-stay programme or join a family member.
Employment Pass
The Malaysian employer normally initiates the Employment Pass process through the relevant company and expatriate systems. The position, sector approvals, applicant qualifications, contract and current salary category must align.
Malaysia implemented revised Employment Pass salary thresholds and duration settings from 1 June 2026. Offers, renewals and dependant planning should be checked against the current category rather than an older guidebook.
Residence Pass-Talent (RP-T)
RP-T is designed for qualifying expatriates already working in Malaysia who meet the current employment, salary, tax, experience and qualification requirements. It offers longer-term career flexibility but remains discretionary.
Evidence should show more than tenure. The application should make the applicant's expertise, contribution to Malaysia, tax record and professional standing clear and verifiable.
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H)
MM2H is a lifestyle-residence program, not a general employment pass. Current categories have different fixed-deposit, property, age, stay and other requirements, and applications are handled through licensed MM2H operators.
Applicants should distinguish federal MM2H terms from any state or special-zone arrangement. Local work, business management, tax and family-member activities require separate advice.
Dependant and Long-Term Social Visit Passes
Dependant eligibility and duration generally follow the principal applicant's pass and passport validity. Different family relationships may require a Dependant Pass or a Long-Term Social Visit Pass.
A dependant does not automatically receive local work permission. A separate Employment Pass or other authorization may be required before taking employment.
Eligibility & evidence
Show the Real Employer, Work and Residence Story

- Qualifications and professional history
- Employment and contribution records
- Income, tax and financial evidence
- Identity and family documents
Confirm the supporting framework.
- Employer and position approvals
- Residence Pass-Talent eligibility records
- Licensed MM2H operator and category records
- Current pass, salary and renewal requirements
Pass purpose controls the evidence. A local employee, established expatriate, MM2H applicant and dependant should not present the same application story.

Check Family Eligibility and Work Rights Separately
A spouse, child, parent or adult dependant may fall under different pass categories. Relationship, age, custody, passport validity and the principal applicant's pass determine the correct route and duration.
Family residence does not automatically grant permission to work. Schooling, healthcare, tax residence and any employment plan should be mapped before the move.
