Country overview

Start with the Applicant, Occupation and Destination

Australia offers separate skilled, employer-sponsored, innovation and family migration pathways. The right starting point depends on the applicant's occupation, qualifications, experience, English-language results, sponsor and intended state or territory.

Some routes are points-tested and invitation-based; others depend on an employer, government nomination, exceptional achievement or a qualifying family relationship. Eligibility for one pathway should not be assumed from eligibility for another.

Use current pathway names and current occupation settings.

The National Innovation visa replaced the former Global Talent route, and skilled or employer-sponsored settings can change. Confirm the live requirements before committing to a timeline.

Pathway details

Understand What Drives Each Pathway

A useful comparison looks beyond the visa number. It connects the applicant's profile, occupation, sponsor, location and long-term objective to the current criteria and application sequence.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Subclass 189 is designed for invited skilled applicants whose profile meets the current requirements. The expression of interest records age, English, qualifications, employment and other points claims; the evidence submitted later must support those claims.

Meeting a published minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation. Occupation settings, invitation rounds and competitive profiles should be checked before relying on this route.

Skilled Nominated and Regional Visas (190 and 491)

State and territory nomination criteria sit alongside federal visa requirements. Each jurisdiction may prioritise different occupations, experience, residence history, job offers or local connections.

Subclass 190 is a permanent visa, while subclass 491 is a provisional regional pathway that can lead toward permanent residence if the later requirements are met. Nomination is not interchangeable across jurisdictions.

Skills in Demand, Employer Nomination and Regional Sponsorship (482, 186 and 494)

Employer-sponsored cases connect an approved or eligible business, a genuine position and an applicant who meets the requirements of the selected pathway. Labour-market, salary, licensing and English requirements may also apply.

Temporary or regional sponsorship does not automatically lead to permanent residence. Any later residence strategy should be assessed under the rules and employment history that apply at that time.

National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)

The National Innovation visa is not a general business or investment visa. The applicant must first submit an expression of interest and be invited before applying.

A strong profile explains the significance and reach of the applicant's achievements, current standing and proposed contribution to Australia. Independent recognition and evidence of future value are central.

Partner, Parent and Other Family Pathways

Family migration is category-specific. Relationship evidence, sponsor eligibility, health and character requirements, location and previous visa history can all affect the process.

Some family categories have limited places or long processing periods. Temporary bridging, travel and work arrangements should be considered separately from the final outcome.

Eligibility & evidence

Build Evidence Around the Selected Criteria

Applicant profile

Make every claim verifiable.

  • Identity, qualifications and employment history
  • English-language and skills-assessment records
  • Evidence supporting points or achievements
  • Consistent civil and family documents
Sponsor or nominator

Document the supporting party.

  • Employer operations and genuine position
  • State or territory nomination requirements
  • Employment terms, salary and role description
  • Relationship and sponsorship evidence

An expression of interest is not the visa application. Claims made at the selection stage must remain accurate and be supported when the formal application is lodged.

Work, study, travel, regional residence and sponsor obligations can differ between temporary and permanent visas. Check the conditions applying to every family member, not only the principal applicant.
