Start with the entity and footprint.

The federal return type depends on the business structure, while state and local obligations depend on formation, activity, people, property and sales. A company may have duties outside its formation state.

Track income, estimated and employment taxes.

Federal business taxes can include income, estimated, employment and excise taxes. Employers also have deposit, return and wage-reporting duties. State payroll and sales tax obligations must be tracked separately.

Keep records that support the return.

IRS guidance emphasises records that clearly show income and expenses and support deductions and return entries. Employment tax records generally require their own retention period.
