Choose the school model before the neighbourhood.
Public district schools, charter schools, private schools and international options have different governance, admissions and cost structures. Confirm which models are realistic for the student before narrowing the housing search.
Public-school rules are local.
District boundaries, residence evidence, registration procedures, school assignment and transfer rules should be confirmed with the relevant district. A home address may affect access, but it does not replace formal enrolment.
Plan grade and credit continuity.
For older students, review transcripts, graduation requirements, course sequencing, advanced subjects, English-language support and how previous credits may be evaluated.
A school rating is not a complete fit assessment.
Consider student support, safeguarding, class environment, subject access, journey time and the child's own readiness.
Prepare records before arrival.
Collect identity documents, address evidence, immunisation or health records where required, transcripts, course descriptions and special-support documentation. Confirm requirements locally.
